I now understand the importance of Collagen and why it is so beneficial for the human body? We need to take collagen supplements in pill form or powder to use in our drink. As mature women, we’re losing it….that is to say our collagen.
Collagen is Greek for “kolla”, which means glue. Collagen Protein found in our bodies holds us together. Collagen production declines naturally as we get older. So it’s not a bad idea to take supplements. If you decide to take collagen supplements, take it with vitamin C—it helps absorb the nutrients in the collagen.
There’s Healing in the Bones
An excellent way to get your Collagen is through Bone Broth. Beef (grass-fed) or chicken bones make good healthy broth. Doesn’t this remind you of the times you were sick, and Mom or Nana gave you chicken soup or broth? I guess this and other natural concoctions they gave us were handed down through the generations because they WORKED, and many people could ill afford to see a doctor.
Thanks to our loving Mom’s and Grans, and because of them, I gave chicken soup and broth to my kids when they were sick and now I give it to my grandkids.
Healing comes from the natural earth, in this case from the Bones of certain animals. Whatever made us change from natural remedies to manufactured drugs? Oh, I know….modern science, convenience, knowledge, and the big one, MONEY!
Modern medicines can be lifesavers when certain conditions are in place, so I’m not bashing for sure. However, I’m challenging myself and you, my Sister’s, to eat more of those things that come from the earth, grass-fed beef, and free-range chicken.
Here Are Some Benefits of Taking Collagen Protein
- Brain and Alzheimer’s protection (use collagen lV)
- Prevent and help treat heart disease
- Heal leaky gut syndrome
- Ease joint and knee pain
- Improve skin elasticity (use hydrolyzed collagen)
- Say goodbye to brittle broken nails
- Less back pain
There are other benefits but I listed the top 7.
Improve Skin – From the Inside Out
I used to think of collagen in skin care creams and lotions only. Ads for anti-aging creams taut it’s power to reverse wrinkles and signs of aging, although there isn’t enough research to fully back those claims.
The real lasting benefits of collagen in our skin comes from the inside out. Adding collagen supplements like Collagen Protein or Bone Broth improves skin elasticity and gives it a glow.
Foods That Promote Collagen
Here’s a partial list of foods that promote Collagen health:
- Wild Salmon
- Eggs (from free-range chickens)
- Leafy greens like kale and spinach
- Chia seeds
- Pumpkin seeds
- Bison is often referred to as “liquid gold” because of the many nutrients that are typically much more difficult to find from exogenous sources.
Bone Broth is made up of Type 2 Collagen which is only found in bones and connective tissue. Because of its positive effects in joint health, teeth, and skin, you might think of it as an anti-aging elixir.
Bone Broth Recipes
- 4 lbs of beef bones (from grass-fed beef or bison) with marrow chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 onions, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, smashed
- Herbs of choice
- 18 cups of water
Put all in a pot and simmer for 48 hours. Once cool enough, drain to leave liquid.
Put in mason jars with lids. Enjoy throughout the day.
- Pastured Chicken Carcasses (or 4 lbs pastured animal bones)
- 10 cups of filtered water
- 2 tbsp. peppercorns
- 1 lemon
- 3 tsp. turmeric
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
- 3 bay leaves
Preheat oven to 400F. Place bones on a sheet pan and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 45 minutes.
Next, transfer them to the bowl of your slow cooker (or electric pressure cooker).
Add in the peppercorns, bay leaves, apple cider vinegar, and water.
Cook on low for 24-48 hours.
*For pressure-cooking, cook on high for 2 hours, then change the pressure cooker function to slow cooker and cook on low for 12 hours.
When done, place a fine mesh sieve or strainer over a large bowl or pitcher. Carefully strain broth.
Discard the bones, bay leaves, and peppercorns.
Distribute the broth between three mason jars, about 2 cups each.
Mix in 1 tsp of turmeric to each jar and add 1-2 slices of lemon.
Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
To heat, gently simmer stove top with a lemon slice.
There are some things that I rather receive or purchase already put together. DIY bone broth is OK, but since there are already some excellent Collagen products on the market, why go through the bother. It would be a bother to me but there are others who love cooking and trying new recipes. For the DIY’ers, let us know how it turns out by posting something in the comment section.
I could go on and on about the benefits of collagen. There is a saying that says “I can show you better than I can tell you”. So results are what we’re interested in! If you decide to take the challenge with me and purchase Collagen Protein Powder or Bone Broth, look for non-gmo, pasteurized or grass fed, gluten free, and no sweet flavoring (unless you prefer that sort of taste).
Something to ponder: with so many items on the market, whether food, medicines, clothes, or whatever—there is nothing that is going to please 100% of the people 100% of the time. In my quest to find the best Collagen, and going over the reviews, there was always a small percentage of people who had negative experiences. It’s just the way our bodies react to what we put on, the environment we’re in, and what we put in our mouths. I’m happy to give my recommendations, but ultimately you do what’s best for you. I encourage you to leave a comment below with your recommendation and/or experience.
